On December 10, 2024, an “Exchange between CO2-producing sectors and future CO2 storage operators” took place at the DGMK office in Hamburg.
The event brought together experts from science, industry, industry associations and clubs to discuss CO2 infrastructure and storage, as well as current legal developments.
The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Gesa Netzeband (Managing Director DGMK e.V.) and Christoph Hunsche (CCUS working group leader). This was followed by an overview of possible ways for German emitters to separate, transport and store CO2, presented as an impulse from industry. Another important item on the agenda was the presentation by Prof. Dr. Alexander Proelß (University of Hamburg), who provided information on the legal developments regarding CO2 storage in Germany.
After a lunch break, the results of the “Scientific Study on the National and International Technical Status of Storage and Pipeline Transportation of CO2” were presented.
The study summarizes the state of knowledge about CO2 storage and CO2 pipeline transportation based on the many years of experience gained from projects in operation and in the planning stage in Norway and North America and shows the transferability and feasibility for projects in Germany. The focus here is primarily on CO2 storage and downstream on CO2 pipeline transport. Furthermore, the study also shows the possibilities of intermediate storage of CO2 in addition to the permanent storage of CO2. Further information can be found on the DGMK website. Publication of the study is planned.
Dr. Johannes Ruppert from VDZ concluded the meeting by presenting the results of a study on the requirements for a CO2 infrastructure in Germany and the conditions for climate neutrality in the cement, lime and waste incineration sectors.
The meeting provided a valuable platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience between emitters, providers of infrastructure solutions, storage solutions, their organizations and representatives from the scientific community. Due to the great success of the format, it is to be held again in 2025.
